There are six movies, but George Lucas made Star Wars in 1977. It technically was called A New Hope and was part 4. He followed in 1980 with The Empire Strikes Back. Then in 1983 he released part 6, The Return of the Jedi. At the end of it, the Emperor is vanquished and Lord Vader (Anakin) is dead, but is in the Good Force. The more recent Star Wars movies are parts 1, 2, & 3. They tell us what turned Anakin to the dark side, introduce us to Luke and Leia's mother, and show why the Empire was such an evil force in parts 4, 5,& 6. I hope that helped.

Ok to start there are 9 books. The 3 films from the 70's (episodes 4-6/IV-VI) books 4-6 respeciftly. The modern 3 are based on the first three book (which meens that they are prequils)
So when you say you just watched the 3rd movie, do you meen the old one or new one. (new one is "Revenge of the sith" and the old one is "Return of the Jedi" If you watched R.O.T.S, then you need to watch the other 3 to know what happens next. If you watch R.O.T.J, then one one knows.
There is rumour that Lucas will NOT make episodes 7-9

they came out with the original star wars trilogy, and then george lucas decided to create three more movies to set the stage of the original three. So, the original triogy, got 4, 5, and 6, and the three new ones were1, 2, and 3. So, now ther is a 1 thru 6 star wars movies. #3 doesn't end the movie sextet. i think george lucas should create a 7-9 movies based on the books on how han solo and leia get maried. :) i love star wars. i'm kinda a nerd. :) Well, hope that helps!

The saga is complete in telling the full story (as George had nine films in the original approach), but #3 doesn't end the film viewing of the tales

It's the missing link between Episode 2-Attack of The Clones, and Episode 4-A New Hope.
However 1, 2, and 3 were crap!

Movie wise yes. The next three movies are set in a time before the 1st 3. Sounds kind of stupid and it is. Since you kind of know what is going to happen. I agree with the other answer that said novels. Some of the novels going forward are pretty good. Princess Leia is going to have twins. Hope that does not give it away.

Yeah, there are 6 movies. But the last 3 were made first and then the first 3 were made.
That means the 3rd film was the last one to be made and therefore completed the sextet.

Yes it is.
originally George Lucas thought of the first 3 movies, but lack of proper technology and CG at that time(1987) prevented him from doing it first.
So, he made the 4,5 and 6 to make it easier and providing the future for himself at the same time.
