vent free appliances are typically more efficient than vented appliances, and tend to put off more carbon doixide (what we exhale) than carbon monoxide (typical byproduct of combustion.) These appliances are safe to burn inside, but some cities and states prohibit from installation in a bedroom, and some manufacturers recommend limiting burn time. Its important to note that they produce carbon dioxide- less toxic than carbon monoxide, but excessive amounts of it can displace oxygen and cause suffocation. Your typical CO detector does not check for CO2.

Unvented - vents the combustion fumes to the room the heater is in. This is not good practice and you should have a high quality carbon monoxide detector in the room. Vented has a "chimney" or vent to carry away the fumes. Some heaters are double vented and bring air from outside via a vent to burn and another vent to carry away the fumes.

Unvented appliances are NOT more efficient at burning than vented.

Through the vent to the outside.

Unvented is self explanitory. No outside venting.
