Intestate means "without a will". This does not change the fact that the estate is responsible for paying the debts of the deceased.

Intestate simply means dying without a will.

Her estate will go to a probate court. Any assets will go to pay their debts first. Anything left over will go to next of kin, in the order set by the state for such cases.

No one but the estate can be held liable for the deceased's debts, unless they had signed for the debt themselves.
