The former USSR was such a better rival than the people are today. The rivalry was actually better with competion in space, the Olympics and Stallone Movies. We (US and USSR) really never argued about God...we just argued over how to run an economy. Money is always a better topic than religion for discussion.

I used to have nightmares then (I was young) of russian paratroopers hailing down on us (like that scene from the movie Red Dawn) wearing those notorious all red minimalistic hockey outfits with the big CCCP across the chest beating me up with their hockey sticks. It was a silly nightmare and when I awoke I knew it was. However, I don't know if with today's brutality, today's kids can say the same about the nightmares they have now. I could be wrong, but growing up in the Cold War made a confrontation with the USSR seem always impending but ultimately avoidable. Today, it seems to me the confrontation is ultimately imminent and seemingly unavoidable.
BTW - I love your Avatar Logo - LOL - The Major would be proud ;-)

I do, I was born there. Do not get me wrong - I do not miss a bit the fail idea of communism, the cruel authoritarian regime, the lack of freedoms. What I miss is the sense of a national identity, the pride, the ideals, the hope. Now days Russia is in a way boring, it is too westernized, Wild Wild East capitalism but with a taste of a Byzantine poison. So, you never know - there might be your new plot for James Bond movie!

I don't miss the Soviets.

It is ridiculous that America as a superpower has gone from a potential all out ballistic shootout with another space faring nation to cave hopping with a bunch of sandal wearing savages.

We shouldn't be appeasing the Islamo-fascists; we should be using bombs to convince them they are wrong to attack us.

Oh yeah, the possibility of immanent destruction of every human being on Earth at a moment's notice looming over our heads. We had it made.

This is life you're talking about, not sports.
