If you want to buy him a gift than do so. It should be from the heart if you want to give at all..not from obligation.

You are not wrong in your thoughts and feelings about this father-in-law's behavior. Do you suppose he is rich because he's like he is? I would recommend you overlook this 'behavior', ignoring the lists, give the same type of gift you would have given them, had this thing not have happened.
Why don't you write him a poem and give it to him? Wow, would that go over well?
Good luck - you have your hands full, but remember that charity is the heart of Christmas. Love is what God is all about. Jesus is the reason we celebrate Christmas and He taught us to love above all other things.

That is funny. I would just play along with it. The reason he has planes, yachts and several homes is because he is the way he is. Besides maybe your in the will. LOL

If you are always asking what you can get him, then I see no reason for him to not give you a list! Just because people have money doesn't mean they don't like getting gifts! Yes, my family makes out lists and gives them to each other just to make it easier. We don't have to buy off the list, it just gives us ideas if we need any. I always give from the heart, if I buy off the list or not! You are making to big of deal out of it!

LOL - that is funny. But at least when you have a list so you can get him something he really wants, unlike my father who says he never wants anything and winds up getting the same gift every year - some old spice, new slippers and a book.
Just curious, what is on his list anyway?

Are you sure that his name is not mr. scrooge!! lol
I wouldn't give him or his wife anything . I would instead donate some money to true people who need help. How about those in new orleans. I think he is just pushing his weight around and the family let him get away with it.
you will probably get some heat for this but it will blow over.

alot of people ask others what they want for christmas and its not a terrible thing, because the person gets what they went.
It kinda ruins the surprise, but it saves people time.
concerning your father in law: was he completely serious when he gave it too you?
if he was, you could lightheartedly say, "so I guess we should get on selling our house now to fill the yacht tank, do you think it'd fill half?" or something to that effect.
honestly, why say anything though.. old people (bless them) tend to get a bit weird in their dotage.

I would make something cheap and stupid for him and give it too him w/ such sad doggie eyes that he would have a guilt trip follow him around for least a year.
take some home made playdough and make something stupid for his boat or like an ashtray, etc. or at least don't get one thing on his list.
its okay to give someone a list if they first ask for the list....to just give a list over....thats against basic morals let alone a whole long list of other issues.

I gotta be honest with you... while this IS uncouth, I would really appreciate it if my in-laws (or even my own parents!) would do this since thinking of gifts for them can be horribly difficult. I would just smile and laugh... and then get the cheapest thing on the list!!! HA!

If he has all these things...why in the world would he need anything else...He seems like an a##. Know what I mean, I would take the list and trash it...I mean, come on, Christmas is about giving, not receiving...Right...

In my family, everyone makes a Christmas list.... but I bet it doesn't have things as expensive as his does. Your F-inlaw sounds like a jerk. Next time he passes the hat around the airplane for gas, just put your christmas list in it.
