It can't be about his marriage with tawny, b/c the song was written in 1981 and they were married in 1989 and divorced in 1991. I can't find anything about the song's meaning, but there are sites that you can look at if you want, just do a google search for "song meanings" and see if you can find anything. The end of his place in Deep Purple sounds like a good reason, though.
