The fog test. It will work on any stone, no matter what the cut or setting. Where as the "scratch glass" or "read through it" tests can't be done once a diamond is in a setting. And different cuts can be read through, and other synthetics can scratch glass.

The fog test:
Hold it up to your mouth, and breath heavily on it. A real diamond disperses heat so quickly that by the time you take it away from your mouth, the stone is un-fogged. A fake stone will still be fogged up (cloudy looking) long enough to tell that you breathed on it.

They have some very realistic synthetic diamonds out there. That can fool the inexperienced. The best thing to do is to take it to a reputable jeweler. Dont rely on if it cuts glass or not!

A real diamond will cut glass.

Swipe the diamond across a mirror. (Preferably a cheap hand one and not the one in your bathroom).
