I don't think colleges look at a misdemeanor as a negative. As long as a person can pay the bills, and pass the classes, they are OK with him.
What you could do is have him think he's OK going through school, but when he graduates he gets beaten out for his dream job because of the DUI. That could happen. Employers are much more likely to consider that when hiring.

From my understanding most schools don't check criminal records, although if they somehow find out about a criminal record the admission can be rescinded. I don't know if you remember this, but when O.C. character Marisa was "admitted" to UC Berkeley there was quite a stir because she killed someone or was arrested for drugs or something (I never watched to show, I only remember the situation because I go to Cal). Anyway, the administration said in a few interviews that her criminal record wouldn't have effected her admittance because they don't check that (time constrictions, etc). My point is, it might vary from school to school though so you should just call the Office of Admissions for a few schools that your character might attend and check their policy.

Well if he isn't in jail, hopefully he can pay for college. Remember he has that DUI to pay now. Does he have a DL to get to school? Overall, he should still be accepted to colleges, yeah no one in college has ever gotten a DUI! Not!!

Why not set up a meeting with a local college or university administrator and find out. this info should be readily available. It would require you to talk to a real person, though.
Why haven't you done so already? Talk to a real person that is. You could have had your answer already with a couple of phone calls.

I think he could probably get into a decent college. Definitely Ivy League or even really good schools, but higher than community college. I know kids who have gotten arrested a few times but still go to okay schools (I am not one of them, don't worry). Good luck with your script!

No, a DUI would not be considered when applying for college. But a drug charge definitely can affect your eligibility for federal student loans/financial aid.

Driving while drunk didn't keep Bush from getting elected -- of course he got off with a slap on the wrist rather than a conviction.
And his daughter wasn't kicked out of UT when she was caught drinking illegally.
