Japan is a fast moving society. If you had to run and run and run for 18 years non stop with everyone around telling you to "hurry up slowpoke!" you would have 2 options. Keep going and almost kill yourself (lots of stress related deaths) or just give up and quit on the spot (hikkikomori)
1-Japan is only stagnant in regards to the population, because no one is having children anymore, so the population is getting greyer and greyer. Its a sad fact, they need to get down and busy and stop working but start making families.
2-The hikkikomori are mainly college aged students who lock themselves in their rooms. Even the family members are not allowed in. This is not societies problem, this is the parents problem I think. I mean if I closed myself in my room my mum would tell me to get out and get a life. She would just barge in there, but the Japanese family is just accepting of this problem. eg. One guy closed himself in the kitchen, and the family ate takeaways for months, and then extended the house and built another kitchen!!!!!!!!!! I cant believe it, they should just drag the kid out of there!! Anyway its a real sad topic and there are staggering numbers of hikkikomori.
3- Japanese people are materialistic because they have money and there is so much cool stuff and popular fashion in Japan its hard not to be.

When the financial crisis hit Asia, Japan didn't borrow any money from the IMF.
The economy is said it was not that good last 10 years. It was right. But the world medias focused negative news and pictures only. They didn't introduce the data of the carriage trade (wealthy people).
Actually, the saraly of the citizens continued to elevate every year (slightly though).
I remember one country in Asia, had to ask help for IMF. Because the economy turned into terrible situation. As the result, IMF commanded many issues to the country.
You better check exact datas which world writes. I live in Japan, and today I am really surprising the quick recovery of the economy. I don't compare with other nations. However, you better think why Japan can buy Hermes Birkin as much as they want.

I would not say China and South Korea marched ahead of Japan as much as they are catching up. Japan is still producing and manufacturing new products above China and South Korea. China and South Korea may have several vehicle companies but compare that to Japan’s market share in the US.

Actually Japan isn't stagnant, it's one of the only capable competitors to the US, and the quality of life in Japan is far better than it is in China and South Korea. In truth all 3 of them are developing nicely since they've adapted forms of capitalism, but Japan's doing better so far since Japan started earlier, and did it better, as well.
