Do it right or don't bother. There are too many unsafe manners to connect a generator. Read through my web site and do your research to determine how to do it properly. If you decide to hire an electrician, highly recommended, you will be in a better position to understand what is being done and ensure it is done properly.

This is somewhat tricky, as it is important to make the connection in such a way that power from the generator cannot be sent back out to the power line. Transfer panels are available from large home repair stores that can be wired to transfer individual circuits from power line input to generator input; since no circuit can be connected to the power line and the generator at the same time, power will not be sent back out to the power line.

The best way to hook up a back up generator is with an automatic transfer switch. These can be installed by a local licensed electrician. For a pretty simple diagram of a generator with a transfer switch see the web site below.

Whatever you do ignore Shadous idea of plugging into a socket unless you really want to wreck your generator and some house electrics. You must obtain the instruction set from the manufacturer. Otherwise run extension leads terminating in sockets and plug items straight into the extended sockets.
