You realize that all free download site are illegal? The iTunes store has some (legal) free music every week (check the store every Tuesday.) The rest of them are only 99 cent.
If you plug in your iPod to an empty iTunes, and tell it to sync to iTunes, it will replace the content of your iPod with the current content of iTunes, which is NOTHING. In other words, it willl empty the iPod. iPod music download is only a one-way affair: From iTunes to your iPod.

You shouldn't loose your music. itunes should show up and show the songs that you do have on your ipod. Limewire is a good place to find music.
