Cow tipping is a pastime allegedly common in rural areas, in which participants sneak up on an upright sleeping cow and then push it over for amusement. Some variants of this urban legend state that the cow is then unable to get up.
One popular variant relies on a supposition that cows lean into a steady wind while asleep in order to keep balance. Based on this, the cow tipper lightly pushes against one side of the cow's torso, and gradually increases the force of push. The cow, while asleep, leans into the push and remains upright. Then when the cow tipper has all of their body weight on the cow, they jump to the side. The cow, still leaning into the ‘wind’, tips over in that direction.
There is no evidence, aside from mostly unreliable eyewitness reports, that any cows have ever been tipped in the purported manner. In particular, nobody has ever produced any video or other reliable photographic evidence showing that it has been done.
Based on the cow's weight and body structure, the weight of one person and the potential force that could be exerted make the feat physically impossible.[1] It could potentially be done by more than one person, but studies have found that it would take at least five people to exert enough force to actually push a cow over. The possibility of five people sneaking up on a cow undetected is extremely unlikely, since cows are easily disturbed.[2] The amount of force and feasibility of tipping would also be highly dependent upon the stance of cow at the moment,[3] which might contribute to the difficulty in replicating the task.

"Cow tipping" might be fun for ignorant city people to talk about, but in practice it does NOT happen - for a whole bunch of reasons. Cattle do not sleep standing up - sometimes they might drift into a very light sleep-like state, but their senses of hearing and smell remain active. Cattle recognize individual people, and a would-be "cow tipper" would not be able to approach within 20 feet because the cattle would simply walk away. OK, for those of you who insist the above facts wouldn t stop you: Let s suppose you did somehow manage to sneak up to a standing bovine and were all ready to "tip" it. This 1000 pound (or more!) animal can feel a fly on it s butt in a windstorm, so the instant your hand touches its hide, the cow will jump and run away faster than I can tell about it. Yes, cattle can run - quite fast, really. OK, maybe you have found the one cow that s deaf, has no sense of smell and also no nerve endings in its hide, and it is standing there patiently waiting to be "tipped". There has been a boatload of information published about the forces required to topple a large animal, so I won t repeat it here. If, by yet another in a series of miracles, you are somehow able to apply the necessary amount of force to the side of your deaf, smell deprived and touch insensitive bovine, the animal will simply step sideways - IT WILL NOT TIP OVER.
This note is especially for those of you who continue to insist that you have actually "tipped" a cow: either you got very intoxicated by some substance and it gave you hallucinations, or (more likely) you are a liar.

When I was young, before I knew the possible danger to the cow I went tipping. Many cows who live their whole lives in pastures sleep standing up, so two people can usually push one over. There's no real danger of being chased by a bull, most bulls are kept seperate from the females while at pasture, because they're more of a liability,in many ways.
Now that I know better, I do think this is cruel. Farmers fatten cows through breeding, genitics and hormones to the extent that some cows have broken ribs by simply lying on their sides. If the cow breaks a rib or a leg they're put down and sold for hambuger, which is also what happens if they manage to survive.

Cow tipping comes from an old pagan ritual which involved a kind of bullfight between a young man and a young bull where the aim was to push the bull into a pit, the idea of tipping came from the fact that, as weapons were rarely used in the ritual it would be a common tactic to exhaust the bullto the point where you can simply tip it into the pit. It is unsure whether this was a form of trail for progression into adulthood or just a form of entertainment or ritual sacrifice, however it is thought that stonehenge was the first ever bullring

I grew up on a ranch, and yes, some cows do sleep standing up. None of the people I knew ever actually went "cow tipping" because you could seriously hurt the poor cow. They weigh so much that you could end up cracking or breaking their ribs by doing so.
I do believe that there are people out there cruel enough to try it though.

Its possible, I hate to say it but I live in the country, people have done it, you can actually kill a cow if you do it wrong. They say You go up to a cow that is sleeping nice and quiet and push them on the side, usually a cow will move, but there have been cows that fall over! Don't kill the cow though its big trouble and people don't do it as much anymore!
Oh yeah Cows can sleep standing up or down and I would send someone in a pen with a lose bull anyways that's a good way to get killed if the bull don't like you!
