We have kids with ADD/ADHD in our home, so I don't put candy in our stockings. Instead, for the kids, I use small gifts like a new toothbrush and a sample-size tube of toothpaste; a new hairbrush; a tube of chap-stick; scrub-puffs; hair-ties for the girls and hot wheel cars for the boys; sample-sized bottles of hand lotion; small bottles of bubble bath; fun-shaped bath soaps; and such. For the adults, I use small gifts like gift certificates; pocket calendars; mouse pads; music download cards; aroma-therapy candles or bath-salts; scrub-puffs; sample-sized bottles of perfume/cologne; and such. I shop around all year to find sales and sample-sized bottles of products, then I toss them all in a plastic tote on my closet shelf. Come the holiday season, I pull it down and take stock of what I've got vs. what I need. Then I go shopping to fill out the stocking stuffers. If, by some miracle, I have too much ... I take the extras and donate them to the local nursing home or homeless shelter because niceties like shampoo and lotion aren't usually included in the donation boxes. On years when my budget is more limited, I make it simplier. One year, everyone got a "Beanie Baby" and a couple of home-made tree ornaments. Another year, everyone got slipper socks and gloves/mittens. Be creative, stocking stuffers don't have to be candy or fruit. ;)
