We saw him in the 5th book. He was an asshole and Lily really hated him. I don't understand how he got her to finally go out with him after what we saw. What's going on?

James was a teenager, and he wanted Lily's attention, but didn't know how to get it. That's all we know for sure, but I also think Snape loved Lily, and somewhere deep inside, Lily loved him back. Wow, what a way to get James really pissed, right? And no way he would admit to it in front of Lily, so he just said "well, it;s more the fact that he exists." and why not? the book is weird enough already....i mean, voldemort isn't your everyday barman

the simplest explanation is that James was an immature teenager who grew out of it.
My b/f, one of the sweetest and most considerate guys ever, says all the time "thank god you didn't know me in high school - you would have hated me." Apparently he was really unhappy and walked around with a chip on his shoulder being hateful and sarcastic to everyone. His best friend is a female classmate of his who HATED him in high school and used to move her desk away from him because he would call her names and make her cry. They both went to college in the same town and formed a friendship that has lasted years. I have examples of guys who were jerks at my hs becoming cool as well. It's very normal.

The other thing to think about is that there might be more to that story in the 5th book than JK rowling is telling us - maybe James was provoked or something. Remember the title of the chapter is "Snape's worst memory." we're talking about a guy who was a Death Eater and his WORST memory is the jocks picking on him in high school? I think there's got to be more to the story than that.

:) that's Exactly how harry felt... but he needs to remember that all of us have lapses of judgement and immaturity.. remember when he and ron got mad at hermione for butting in all the time, and ron said something like "that girl is sooo annoying" or whatever and she ran off and cried... that was pretty mean. they didn't even really apologize, they just became friends after going thru the troll thing together.

also, we see that ron shares some similar traits w/ james potter, such as caring so much about what girls think about him, looking cool, touching his hair all the time, showing off, and as luna says, ron is nice but can be rather mean or uncaring. therefore, james potter was probably like that: a nice guy overall, but a little flawed in the sense of he thought he was the ****, and didn't have as much compassion that lupin (or harry) does

He was showing off, being a teenage boy. I'm sure eventually he matured into something Lily liked, or rather loved.

They don't really go into it. But Ron and Hermione weren't exactly friends in the begining either, now look at them.

Simple: teenagers are stupid. James grew out of it.

Hmm, well, people change you know... and immature people, mostly, mature eventually... I'm guessing that's what it was...
