branding. it's used for identification of ownership. a couple different forms of branding are freeze branding or tattooing.

I don't think they do that any longer. They have tags instead.
Was called branding now called tagging. The tags look like tiny white wings on the cows back. Right out of a Disney movie. Kinda cute.

Are you referring to "branding"? This leaves a mark that tells ranchers who the cattle belongs to.
Otherwise I can't think of any other name for it but "ouch," on behalf of the cow.
