They don't want others to know how scared they really are inside, so they have to put on a front and act like they're the King of the Hill. They figure people will never know the real them, and that it's okay to be afraid.....it doesn't make them any less of a person.....it's normal. It's better to be yourself than be a fake and end up looking like a fool when they're found out.

low self esteem does that to people it is a defense mechanism to help them seem less venerable

Great question.....the only "explanation" I can come up with is that those people like to be "cool". (IMHO they aren't)
