To help them regurgitate whatever is bothering their stomachs. You will notice minutes after they eat the grass they will throw it back up with whatever is bothering their bellies.

It is a natural emetic and so helps them throw up when they are feeling poorly. It also tastes nice. I nibble on grass stems all the time when I am picking them for my pet cockatiel.
So far, both cats, bird and I have been safe as the grass comes from my own garden and I use no pesticides or insecticides.
Cats seem to know when grass is toxic, but you have to be really careful with dogs, especially the type of dog who will eat anything.
It is best to provide them with grass at home, even if you have no garden. You can easily grow it in pots, or buy some seed-kits at a pet shop.
I am not an expert on nutrition, but I am sure grass has a lot of "something" in it - look at cows and sheep and horses!
I have always loved sucking on a stem of grass ever since I was a child, and still love to do so.
And, maybe, if I ate enough of it, it might help me to throw up too! Seems like a great way to de-tox!

All carnivores including cats and dogs will occasionally eat some vegetative material, i.e. grass, plants, roots, etc. This doesn't always mean they're sick, sometimes they just need a bit of 'salad' to replenish some nutrients that their food may be lacking in. Other times they may over-indulge in grass or other high fiber materials so they will vomit, it's their version of ipecac.

Cats are true carnivores, dogs are carnivores, however, their nutritional needs require that they consume greens.
If you observe your animal eating grass you might see that they gravitate to either a sharp-bladed grass or smooth-bladed grass. The smooth-bladed grass is for nutritional purposes and would be eaten as you or I would eat a salad.
The sharp-bladed grass is meant to irritate the stomach enough to expell it's contents, via regurgation, whether it be a hairball or a foul food it has injested.

Dogs eat grass when they have an upset stomache. It makes them throw up whatever bad thing they ate.

It could be one of two things. He/she could have eaten something which has made them sick to their stomach and they are trying to make themselves throw up.. Or they are not getting the nutrients that they need from the food you are feeding them. Alot of the store brands of dog food are really not that good for your dog. Best case scenario is, if they are eating grass constantly... Call your vet.

They have natural cravings for it. It helps them to digest. Sometimes it helps them vomit. If they are eating large quantities it could be a sign that something is wrong. My cat wouldn't stop eating grass so we took him to the vet and found out he had kidney stones and he died after surgery.

Cats eat grass as it helps to dislodge hairballs in their throats, and to throw up if they've eaten something yukky. Dogs eat grass because they're stoopid.
