Well, it started out as a Celtic celebration as far as we know, so a good guess would be around 300 BC. Kind of hard to know as it was an oral tradition without written documentation. It could be older if the pre-Celtic megalith builders were involved in some way.

I don't think you can point to a specific year... it is a custom not an actual "Holy Day", holiday, or commemoration of a specific historic event. It draws its roots from the night before "All Saints Day" i.e. it was orginally "All Hallow's Eve" in the middle ages.
