and what caused is to get struck by lightning and to couse it to rain, any ideas?

it was a lightning rod.
and he's the jesus-character, man. He's the prophet or savior on that island. he can see the future (or at least sense it), and he knew that lightning would strike close to aaron, so he built a rod to direct it harmlessly into the sand.

It was a lightning conductor. I don't know why he did it exactly but I think it was to point out to Claire that she should have let Desmond fix her roof when he offered to before Charlie came back.
