His mother's maiden name.

Honestly, I think middle names are for honoring people. I will absolutely give my kids middle names that are related to my family and their father's, too. The boys will likely get surnames of their ancestors and the girls will get the names of brave women who emigrated from Ireland and Scotland, or maybe Native American names for their father's side.

If you like that approach do some research into your family's history. There are TONS of unique, meaningful names to be found there. One or more of them will sound wonderful with Matthew and that might be the name you're looking for. You should be able to find any sound, ending, beginning letter, or number of syllables that you want!

My brother in laws name is Matthew William and my sons name is Matthew Robert Russell. With a traditional name like Matthew, I would stick with a more traditional middle name as well, it just flows better I think.

It depends on how many syllables you last name is. I would say it needs to be 1, 2, or 3 cymbals IE. Tate(1), Ryan(2), Kennedy(3). It needs to have rhythm. Does this make any sense?
