Russia was part of the United Soviet Socialist Republic (USSR) which broke up during the cold war. The Ukraine for example was also part of the USSR among a host of other neighbouring countries which are now independant. It is argued that USA intelligence had a part to play in the break-up. Agents infiltrating the Soviet Union and causing civil war through some form of religious manipulation is blamed.
Why are so many americans blinded by their own politics? Does any American understand their countries politics?

The USSR (Union of Soviet Socialist Republics) is the Communist era name for what had previously been the Russian Empire. This stretched from Eastern Europe all the way to the Pacific coast. Its main country was Russia and this had Moscow as its capital. The tsar (or czar - from the Latin Caesar) was an absolute monarch and held total power over the whole empire. After the various revolutions, starting in 1917, the Bolsheviks took over and each of the countries within the empire became a socialist republic, with communist leaders answerable to the central committee of the communist party in Moscow. Right up until the time when the USSR broke up in the '90s, this was still the case. Now, each of the former republics of the union either is, or is trying to be, an independent sovereign state. Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia, the baltic states, are now a part of the EU, as it Poland and various other former soviet satelites. However, Poland, Hungary and others were NEVER a part of the USSR. They were, though, a part of what became known as the easetrn bloc, which was a group of eastern European countries which were undr the influence (or control) of Moscow. Putin is now the president of the Russian federation, which is pretty much just Russia, although still one of the largest countries in the world.

Russia is a single country now, the USSR was federation of states that included several states, many of which have become separate countries after the fall of the USSR in the 90's. See the link.

The USSR does not exist anymore. It was the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics of which Russia was the chief member. Other states included Latvia,Lithuania, Estonia, Chechnya etc.
You could think of the USSR as being the equivalent to the United Kingdom, and Russia as England, Latvia as Wales and so on.

Short answer: Russia was a monarchy until the Communist Revolution overthrew it. Then it became the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, which existed until about 1990, but here in the US and elsewhere it was still called Russia instead of the "Soviets". With the fall of Communism, all the Soviet Republics became "independent nations". So now, Russia is a nation, just a large part of the former USSR. So now when they say "The Russians are coming.", they really are Russians this time!

The USSR (United Soviet Socialist Republic) was a large communist nation made up of many nations (the largest of which was Russia, which was also pretty much the nation in charge) that dissolved in 1989.
Russia is a large nation that exists today.

Extension of Bolshevik power throughout Russia
Lenin tried to increase popularity by giving land to the peasants, nationalising industry, and promising a Constituent Assembly. Such reforms were delayed because of civil war (May 1918 – c.1920) between the Reds and the Whites. The Reds, led by Trotsky, won.
The Civil War extended into a war with Poland (1920-21). Peace was made at Riga (1921) and again Russia was humiliated, but Lenin was desperate for peace (for the first time since 1914).
Lenin called a Constituent Assembly to meet but there were only 14 Bolsheviks in it. Lenin dismissed it and wrote his own constitution (1923), making Russia a dictatorship, and changing its name to the USSR.

The USSR, or the United Soviet Socialist Republic as it was officailly called, included nations such as Poland, Lativa Lithunainia, Slovakia, East Germany, Hungary, Russia, The Crimera and many others. Russia is just a country on its own, although its influence has been left on Eastern Europe.
