i presume when you say windows has gone on c and d drive that one of the windows is a previous installation
by the sounds of it you are quite right when saying a fresh install is the answer
to delete one of these drives you need to re-install windows again(i presume you know all about that) and someway into installation you get a option to delete and create partitions, when this appears you need to delete the d drive and then delete c drive ,this will leave you with one drive on unallocated space ,you need to then create one primary partition in that space, and then press enter to install windows xp pro into that partiiton
this is the part of windows xp that i really like,as its good when you want to create a partition to use as a ghost drive o back up location,i used to use 2 partitions in windows 98 and i used the d drive for a ghost image of 98,so every so often i would do what you call a "roll back",very good when your system starts to behave odd.
this method is also avalible with xp,and with many software programs such as norton ghost, cosmi back up manager
however ,i now use a external hard drive for back ups,and i fell the same as you,one drive is much better
so i recommend you use windows xp set up to re-arrange the drive partitions and then install on c
one tip;;take your time when creating and deleting partitons as one mistake can be a few hours lost
hope this helps
good luck

maximum pcs do not ruin down or positioned on out, they basically pass out of date. EBay and Craigslist are the two crammed with pcs that are nonetheless as sturdy as new yet no one needs them anymore. Compaq replaced right into a rather sturdy form in its day, so there is not any reason a 2005 form could be ineffective or wiped out. 2005 isn't noticeably previous for a working laptop or computing gadget. The greater modern ones are a touch swifter, yet you do not prefer that velocity different than to play the very modern video games, or in keeping with possibility to play or burn Blu Ray disks. each computing gadget gets viruses and additionally the homestead windows gets corrupt over the years. so as that they income from an entire rebuild of homestead windows, formatting the disk and reinstalling homestead windows, each so often. I do it each 3 hundred and sixty 5 days or so. Of all the homestead windows variations, XP is in all probability the main suitable at resisting corruption of homestead windows itself, yet of path that is nonetheless vulnerable to viruses.

I had the same problem. You have to be careful when installing windows. But you can ony format 1 partition (C or D) I chose C but when it was finished, windows xp was still installed on D. So I clicked on D and deleted everything.

Go into my computer and right click on drive C, then go into properties, and then click into tools, and then finally click on the word DEFRAGMENT NOW.
That should do the trick.
