Diffuse structures in the interstellar medium exist on all spatial scales, and the term "clouds" is misleading in a way. Many of objects evolve with time, changing their size and other properties, for example supernova remnants or bubbles created during birth of stars.

Stars are born deep inside large complexes of dense molecular clouds, of sizes of a few parsecs. During their life and even till the very end of their lifecycle, stars radiate tremendous energy in the interstellar medium in terms of photons and energetic particle winds.
