There seems to be conflicting information.

According to "TV Land" George "Goober" Lindsey was the first choice. However, according to the wikipedia trivia section Martin Landau was the first choice for the part but turned it down so he could be on "Mission Impossible".

Martin Landau. He chose Mission Impossible instead. Leornard Nimoy actually replaced him on that show too.
