Any and all lists need to start with Lidstrom (they should just rename the Norris trophy after him since he wins it all the time). Another high point guy is Sergi Zubov for Dallas but he isn't a big physical force type of D man. Niedemyer and Pronger both with the Ducks are amazing (and a big reason why the ducks record is so damn good). As far as pure size I'd go with Zedano Chara (he is 6ft 9). It depends on what kind of defense-man you want but that would be my list.

I'm a little biased for the first one I name (and the third)....but in my opinion...

1) Phaneuf (he would have won the Calder last year if there weren't two stellar rookie forwards)
2) Pronger (despite his rep)
3) Regehr (his brother is pretty good too)
4) Staios
5) Boyle

My 5 are, in no particular order:

Wade Redden (when healthy)
Mike Commodore (though he's been getting the assists this year as a bonus)
Brendan Witt (big hitter)
Andrei Markov (Big body, good wheels)
Shea Weber (newest member of the club; paired with Scott Niedermayer in Anaheim)

There you go 5 only and notice how they are all Canadian kids?
