I don't think it's a stupid question :)

There's no way to know for sure, but we *do* know that the first archeological evidence of "sit-down toilets" is from around 4th century BC Greece, and by the time of the Roman empire they were common. There may have been some kind of sit-down arrangement before then, but no evidence of such a toilet, outhouse, commode, or latrine has survived. So, it's likely that until about 400 BC or so, the vast majority of humans "squatted" rather than sat, either out in a field or over a hole dug for that purpose.

I wouldn't mind if it never changed -- some quality time sitting on the "throne" reading the paper or a book can be a highlight of anyone's day :) Unless there's a good reason to change it, and change it to something more comfortable and convenient, it probably won't ever change.

I think you would have to go all the way back before man walked up right to find the starting point, and I would guess the Early man thought it was better then haven it running down his leg. Now modern man has to escape into the thrown room to get a brief break from the daily grind. So Say We All!

Not really. I mean the baths in Roman times were a big deal and they all sat while they were doing their business. I'm sure the Chinese did the same
