Dollar store!! Luckily they are at an an age where they don't care what they get as long as they get something. You can get 25 things for each of them!! And they will do exactly what they would do if you had spent $1000. Play with it for an hour, throw it on the floor and step on it next week.

I think the best advice I can give you is to buy them each one "big" present each, and then let Santa bring little gift (like from the Dollar Store). Or vice versa.
This is my plan for this year, last year my children received toys we didn't get out of the box until a couple of months ago.
I have three daughters... 1,2,& 4. I decided what my budget would allow... $50.00 each and bought them each a "big" gift. Then I bought them a "santa present" and stocking stuffers.
Toys R Us always has sales that you buy one item and get a free one. Definately try Wal-Mart stores... they usually have toys for a buck or two less (maybe more).
I wouldn't buy a bunch of little presents to make up for a big one though. I find that they don't last as long and generally get lost or broken, lose interest...etc.
Don't fret about Christmas presents though. Your children are young and all they want is your love and exceptance. They will appreciate whatever you or "Santa" bring them.

When my folks were a bit strapped at Christmas we always got practical things - socks, sweaters, shoes and perhaps one toy if it wasn't too expensive. Coloring books are great for that age of child. They usually don't care as long as they have something to open.
Perhaps you can find something at a local Thrift store or St Vincents. As long as it's gently used they'll never know or care. It's not the amount or price tag on the gifts, just that you got them something.
You can also check with your church and see if you can get your kids on the Angel Tree and even the Toys for Tots program but it might be a bit late for something like that.

Dollar Store or Thrift Store should have stuff for that age. Your very smart to try to take care of the kids yet watch your budget if you are suffering from Money problems. Many people would just splurge anyway to try to make the holiday fun for the kids but if you dig your self deeper into debt it will only make things around the house more stressful. Good Job to you.
Also, if they are into movies you can check movie rental places for old movies that they are selling at a discount.
Best of Luck

since the kids r at such a small age go to the dollar tree and get a bunch of 1 dollar items . they usually playy with them once or twice at most anyway. plus they r too young too remember anything except the experience and feeling of the matter anyway. if you can afford it get a couple nicer items each then go get cheapies at family dollar or dollar tree for quanity and the experience. as far as other family members go, here is an excellent idea for the unexpected ones or parties or get togethers. go to wal mart and have family portraits made and buy very inexpensive frames and wrap them and give as a collective gift ie: granny and grampa doe , auntie doe, etc. that way you save yourself from having to deal with last minute gifts and you have family portraits to cherish!

On Christmas day, give them both a BIG hug and say that is worth a million dollars. Later when you can afford it you can always get them something special, BUT I bet they will remember that hug. You can also get them some small things to amuse them on Christmas morning. Dollar stores have a plethora of things that are nice. Happy Holidays

luckily they are young enough to not really know or understand the value of money. kids at those ages are so easy to please. you can go to a dollar store and pick up a few things. they will love them as much as a $50 gift. they have all kinds of things there. crayons, coloring books, reading books, puzzles, toys, play doh, just to name a few. your 5 year old would have a blast in there. i take my kids there to reward them for good behavior and it's nice cause i can say ...pick out whatever you want! it all costs $1.00. also..not sure how crafty you are but i made my children a few things this year. i made them a barbie house myself out of wood, and made furniture and stuff for it. i also made them all a body pillow. you can get nice fabric at walmart for $1.00 a yard. good luck, and i really wouldn't worry about it too much. $10 would buy you 10 gifts for them at a dollar store.

Go to the dollar store!!! You'd be amazed at what kinds of things you can find for them there. Coloring books, crayons, balls, cars, puppets, playdough. You can even make your own playdough to give them. They are so young, it won't matter to them how much you spent on a gift.
