I am a number. When I am subtracted by my square, I get 12. What number am I?

Solution:

let x = the number. Then, the number's square is x^2, so

x^2 - x = 12
x^2 - x - 12 = 0
(x-4)(x+3) = 0
x = 4 or x = -3

Therefore, the number I am is 4 or -3.
