Oh, man. There were so many. Yes, I do think artillary was one of the most dangerous. In addition to having to worry about your own equipment backfiring you also had to worry about the opposing sides fire. Charging in battle at the forefront seemed to be the worst position in the battle (no, duh) due to canon fire. Spying of course was dangerous but then again, so was the role of messenger. If caught you may in fact have the possibility of being tortured for information or worse, thrown in a civil war prison. The North's, from which I heard, was horrendous (but hey, in the Revolutionary War you'd be hung for treason, so what's worse?). There was also the brand new position of manning a iron clad sub which were unrealistically small. Many men drowned due to the fact that the sub's rudders would failed, grounding the vessel until the men ran out of oxygen or drowned.

Keep in mind this was a different kind of war, men "stood toe to toe , and fought it out" that was referring to a 6 hour shooting fest. One could not run or hide excuse me would not. Anything was a danger there was a shorter life span with certain occupations more so the Field Officer; the Standard Bearer and the skirmisher. They are correct to a point about the gun crews (not the cannoniers per say but the the rest of the team, they were famous for being injured from a round, being fires upon, horses, concussion, etc.

God Bless You and The Southern People.

I would say the flag carrier. He couldn't carry the flag and shoot a gun at the same time. All's he could hope fore, is that one of the enemy would get close enougt that he could spear him with the end of the flag. Besides one of the pet peeves during the civil war was shoot the flag carrier, he goes down with the flag they loose the war. Thats why in a lot of civil war movies you see the flag carrier being shot and going to the ground and someone else running up to grab the flag before it touches the ground.

I'd venture cannon fodder. A nine-pounder full of musket balls is a formidable thing to march towards.
