Visit the National Parks of the Rocky Mountains. You can plan a loop trip from Kansas. You can hit Rocky Mtn., Dinosaur near Vernal. Utah, Grand Tetons, Yellowstone all in a long loop. Make the loop larger if you have more time. The National Parks in this country are an under-appreciated National treasure.

Unique as in different from Kansas, or unique as no one else thinks to go there? :-)
As far as I know, the National Park service has worked very hard to make a lot of their properties accessible to people in wheelchairs - certainly something to consider in your case.
I spent over a week in Grand Teton National Park and surrounding areas earlier this summer, and it was beautiful. It wasn't as crowded as Yellowstone, and it was pretty easy to get around. I think there's something there for everyone, and much of it is easily handicapped-accessible. We pretty much ranged from Pinedale to Jackson to Dubois.
Shenandoah National Park and the Blue Ridge Parkway are also very nice, as are the surrounding valleys, rivers, rolling hills, and historical sites.
I recently moved from New England to northern Virginia, and I think the western parts of Maryland and adjoining sections of Pennsylvania are great - hills, streams, farmland, nice people, and good food. By the way, PA does a great job in taking care of their parks and outdoor facilities and roads - some of the best if not the best maintained I've seen.
New England is great too, but overall it seems to get pretty crowded during the summer season. You can still have a good time, but at the more popular areas like beaches and mountains you'll find things pretty backed up. I think their seafood is great in most places, better than MD/VA (except for the crab). Oh, and as a native of the area, I can say the locals are not exactly warm and outgoing. It's not necessarily that they're mean and rotten, just not as warm and friendly at first as folks in some other parts of the country.

We took our summer vacation this year at Utah. We rented a houseboat had some jet ski's and other boats and spent the week waterskiing, fishing, relaxing, etc. The best vacation I have ever been on.
