Yes, it's like they're telling the rest of their band they are better than them.

Nope if they are the main talent behind the sucess of the group then they need to go solo. Groups that have long longevity are the ones in which each member has something equally to contruibute. Ex. the rest of the Pussycat Dolls are basically just background dancers/singers - that's a lot of money to be splitting between a group especially if you are the main one who does most of the writing, chorography, and singing!

I'm not annoyed by it; but I have to question why they decide to become solo artists when they did all of the singing for their respective bands. Take Gwen Stefani - I enjoy some of her music - but she was the only one who sang when she was with No Doubt. So, she's on her own and sells herself by her own name (rather than combined with a band) - what's the real difference?

NOP. Most of the times, these lead singers are the lead voice, the moral leader and the composer of the songs... whay should they keep dividing profits with the band instead of paying any other guitarist or whatever? Good for them.

If you have the option to leave a job and start another, why shouldn't this apply to the entertainment industry?

It is annoying! you think "why not just go solo!?" But it is easier to use that platform than to just be a new unknown artist.
