Is she musical? maybe a keyboard or a fairly decent guitar that she could start to learn on , not really a toy so much as something to hold her interest. How about a game the whole family can play with her like UNO cards they have a lot of nice UNO Gift Box Sets now. UNO is also in an electronic hand held version. Yahtzee also good. What about age appropriate books.
Does she collect anything or have a favorite animal ?-then how about a nice collectible of that animal for her room. ie a chrystal dolphin. Sleeping bags in a favorite theme are very popular with American kids now. I love all the craft box ideas you all ready got. I know she is a girl but people overlook this kind of gift for a girl --a Telescope. Usually only boys get them. I know my brother did and I was so jealous. Know anything about frogs that is what I am in search of. thought I'd take a peek at the answers you got. Good Luck.

If she likes dolls, they have more than just Barbie and Bratz. Get her a Madame Alexander fashion doll, or a paper doll set with paper clothes. You could also get her the Disney Princess line. Those aren't too bad.
As for other toys, a bouncing castle is fun. You can blow them up in your backyard, and are safer than trampolines. A swing set if she doesn't already have one. What about a Bicycle?
For indoor toys, they have model train sets, which are good for both genders, not just boys. She may enjoy an Easel, with chalk and dry erase, or a box of clay. A box of pink legos perhaps.
Those are some ideas.

Not easy task What is a good toy?
Toys are very important in every child’s life to develop coordination and improve small and large motor skills. With the myriad choices out there we hope to help you reduce the stress and time by offering quality products on a wide range of toys. With more than 300,000 toys and children's products, choices can be overwhelming. Select toys that offer a good balance to your child's activities. Creativity toys stimulate self-expression. With paints, colour pens and crayons, children can create their own work, and if you hang up your child’s picture so others can admire them, they love the attention. Give your child lots of encouragement as well as lots of different activities. Talk about programs you watch with your child on TV, play games together, do puzzles. Have fun

Hama Beads, if you can get them where you are. They've been Europe's No 1 Craft Toy for some time now and kids of that age absolutely love them. Wonderfully creative and thoroughly good fun.
Hope this helps

My daughter â¥loves⥠the Littlest Pet Shop ~all of them~ and they range in price from about $4 on up:
http://www.hasbro.com/littlestpetshop/
Also, she likes arts and crafts, so I purchased a plastic box and filled it with all sorts of craft stuff: paper, scissors, glue, tape, pipe cleaners, googly eyes, yarn, paint, etc.
A diary or journal is always good, too.
Or their are some popular book series for kids:
Captain Underpants, I Spy, Black Beauty, I Amber Brown, Series of Unfortunate Events, etc
Or check this out! I was trying to find more book titles, and came across this:

If they don't own it, the DVD of High School Musical. I swear all of my neices and nephews are obsessed w/ that movie. It's really chessy and corny, but it has a good message and there's singing and dancing, so it keeps their attention.
