I guess it will work, but I prefer the contrast. Why not try a little color instead. How about pink or yellow?

On second thought, given the time of year, why not try like green or red?

Black Suit Blue Tie

Be careful wearing too much of one color, especially white and black.

Typically, the rule is do not match your shirt and your suit, your shirt and your tie, or your tie and pocket square. There are some exceptions, but they are rare. If you do decide to go black shirt/black suit, the suit has to be pin stripe and the tie HAS to contrast. Triple dark is no good, you'll blend into the background. A white tie, I think, would be the best move with your shirt/suit combo (if anything). You need something loud, bright and solid color, BUT nothing obnoxious or with a busy design. If you must use a design use paisley (super hot right now).

But your first step here really should be to find out what your date is wearing - that is KEY.

Does a black suit, black shirt and a dark blue tie work for a formal dinner event?

I sometimes where a black shirt with a black tie. The black tie is very textured though and it allows seperation of the fabrics from my suit, shirt, and tie (which would all be black). Wearing a dark blue tie won't be a negative for you. But try to switch it out with a brighter color that can match your complection and/or hair type. If you don't know what your date is wearing then you'll have the same odds of clashing with a blue tie that you would with a yellow tie. Use a lighter color to make yourself stand out more.

Good Luck!

Don't wear a black suit with a black shirt and dark blue tie. Ditch the tie at the very least (after you have gotten to the event).
Otherwise wear a white shirt with your suit and dark blue tie.
but i guess it all depends on where you are going...

It depends on the color of dark blue.....if it's a royal blue then it will look fine. If it's a light blue, you're all set but if the blue is too dark then you might want to go with another color such as a champagne color, ivory or even a very pale green. If it's a formal event, I would go with a solid color tie and not one with a pattern. Patterned ties look like you're working in an office. But black is perfectly acceptable for a formal event.

FYI: if you're not sure what you're date is wearing yet you might want to go with a champagne color (it matches pretty much anything).

Good luck and enjoy your event!

It sounds nice.
Sounds a little mafia-ish but you can NEVER go wrong with black. A black shirt would be better than white unless it is black-tie event.

Wear a very nice watch, polished shoes and have a blue handkerchief in your pocket to match the tie and you'll be all set. :)

Generally, a gray (silver) shirt is probably a better choice than black on black. The blue tie probably would look better on a gray shirt as well. However, black on black is currently popular so you could go with it if you are in a young crowd.

Here is a picture of people in different shirt colors:

Your colour choice of shirt and suit are fine. But make sure the shades of black are the same. It would be nice if the black shirt has grey pin strips. A grey shiny tie would go very well with this.

If you want to go with the black shirt then go with a tie that will stand out like red.....If you want to keep the tie then change into a white shirt or you could wear some tan pants, white shirt, and that tie.........Good luck!!!
ps...find out what your date is wearing and if it is a bright color then you should wear that color of a tie.....pink, blue, yellow, whatever....everything looks good on black.......
