It depends on the time of year you want to go. In the summer time (May- October) it is very very hot, so you want to bring light, loose fitting clothes. Remember women should not wear sleeveless shirts or shorts. From Jan- Apr it is cool in the days and nights. The rest of the year it is typically warm during the day but cooler at night. So bring a light jacket it does not get freezing. You can wear regular clothes (jeans and shirt) inside almost all places so you really do not have to bring fancy clothes if you do not wish. Bring the most comfortable walking shoes you have, because you will do alot of walking.
Make sure your luggage is marked in some way with your name in case something happens and it is easily visible to recongize. Try tying some ribbon on the handle or soemthing like that. When you get off the plane and there are hundreds of others trying to get their luggage, you want to spot it easily.
Right before you go to passport control, you can get your visa at one of the banks they have there on the left hand side. It is also a good time to get a little bit of Egyptian Pounds so you can tip people for helping iwth luggage, cab ride and stuff. Everyone does things for tips, so it is best to be prepared. Also if you go out to dinner and have extra left over, take it and stop and give it to one of the military police that they have everywhere. It is a nice gesture and that way your food doesnt go to waste. My husband and I do that all the time.
Just bring clothes and your camera, because everything else you can buy when you get to Egypt. Toilet paper is a good thing to have, but buy it when you get there at any of the stores (very cheap). Make sure you keep a roll in a bag that you carry with you while out and about, because many places dont have toilet paper or you pay a person for some in the restrooms. Or you can do the Egyptian thing and use water.
About shampoos and personal hygeine items they have everything so dont have the worry about it all spilling out in the suitcase, just buy it in Egypt.
Have a great trip and you are going to love it!!!!!!

I just came back from Egypt on Friday....
You can only pack hygeine items (shampoo...etc) that are in 3 oz or less containers that fit into a quart size ziplock baggie (a little bigger than a sandwich bag) in your carry on. As much of these items as you like in your check-in luggage.
I also brought toilet tissue. They use bidet (water that cleans the rear end) in Egypt, so many places don't have tissue.
For shoes, nothing new or fancy..they will get ruined! Some old comfy ones are best.
Clothes, think spring. The weather is good right now so jeans, t-shirts, a couple sweaters or a light jacket .
camera!!!!!! I took about 300 photos
It's best to pack light because you will probably want to bring things back. The exchange rate is 5.72 Egyptian pounds for every dollar!!! So you can really make out good
Have fun!!!

Bring some fresh clothes: shorts, light t-shirts. Egypt is very hot. The sun is just terrible so bring a hat, and sun glasses. Don't forget your camera. Take some boots with you. A map in case you get lost. That's about it I know of. Have a nice trip, good luck.
