let's say that I'm not so brilliant about PCs.... although we, as society, are forced into it, to me it remains a machine without soul! and this is why I always need help for "easy" stuff....

the problem is that the volume coming from my laptop (Acer, "travelmate" series) has always been sooo low... finally yesterday I bought some speakers to find out what I believe to be a "balance fault" (ok have a laugh now... thanks!)???!!!

I tried to watch a DVD but suddenly realized that the backgound noise (like music or cars passing...) is louder than the "talking" of the actors.
WHY is that???
HOW do I fix it???
I tried to play with the volume equaliser or something similar but the only thing that change is the background sound... and still the background seems to be on top of the voices...
HELP HELP HELP

thank you!

first lets locate the sound control panel.
1 click start
2 click control Panel
3 click Sound and Audio Devices.
4 click the button labeled advanced or click Audio then click Volume
5 on the window that opens make sure the WAVE slider is all the way up.
to adjust the balance at the top of the verticle slider is a horizontal slider for all the options, however only adjust the horizontal slider for the MASTER VOLUME or on some sound cards PLAY CONTROL (the balance is clearly labeled.

adjust until you get the audio correctly balanced. now when done you can close the windows you opened in the normal way.

now if the speakers you have purchased are not self powered then you will have a problem as lap top speakers are in general not realy designed or any use for listening to audio from DVD or music in general, as they can easily distort the sound quailty.
so get powered speakers either that take batteries in the back or are mains powered or even USB powered.
now in the tools or options menu of the DVD player program it will have an Audio settings option. if you use cyberlink powerDVD (standard with ACER desktop systems) then adjust the audio setting to Noisy environment to get your computer to play the audio as loud as possible. don't worry you will still be able to use the standard volume control to adjust the audio.
make sure you set the output to STERO and it is not set to surround sound or multiple speaker set ups like 5.1 or 7.1 for example.
there may be a volume control dial on your computer in adition to the software volume control make sure that it is turned to as loud as possibl then you can rely on the software only option to adjust the audio.
however if all else fails then use the headphones from your media player (Ipod, walkman etc.) and you will be able to get better audio experiance.

however a portable DVD player may be a better option than your lap top for DVD movie play back as they are designed specific for the job.

Whatever progrma you're using to watch the video obviously has a DVD mixer included in it that makes ambient sounds (cars or background noise) louder so you can hear it. Unfortunately, laptops aren't designed for surround sound.

Anyhow, locate the volume button in the lower right hand corner of your screen, in the taskbar. Double click on it and turn everything all the way up. Then go into whatever program you use and make sure that it's volume mixer, if it has one, looks the same.

Two possible causes pop to my mind:

a) The DVD you're using is not an original but a bad copy which levels out the main sound in a film (spoken conversation)
b) The laptop just isn't the perfect setting to watch DVDs, even with loudspeakers. If you want to watch DVDs when travelling, you should buy a portable DVD player with screen...

Hope this helps a little.

A lot of DVDs are optimised for surround sound and the mastering is not so great for normal speakers. I have the same problem as you are having when I watch DVDs on my old TV and my mate has a similar problem with his TV.
