On Christmas day, I want to be able to send a live video of my family in New York, to my Niece who is in the military in Hawaii.
I want her to be able to, at the same time, send a video of her family, to me.
I am not sure where to begin, what camara to use (inexpensive) and what service to look for.

If you just want to send videos back and forth with your niece, you could do this with any digital camera that offers video features (saving in avi or mpg format). If you can record in RealMedia (.rm) format, it will make it easier to send due to compression making the files much smaller.

However, if you want to do LIVE video, then you probably need a webcam that ataches to your PC, unless you have a digital camera that can act like a webcam. Some cameras support this...you would plug in the camera as if to download the images on it, but then run a special program that does the video streaming to the internet.

Ideally, what you may want to do is coordinate with your niece in Hawaii and see if you can get equipment that will allow you to do video-conferencing via the internet. That way, both she and you will have a webcam and the software to chat online and see each other as you open gifts, sing songs, or whatever else you may want to do during the holidays.

I have not played with enough webcams to tell you which would be best. However, if you talk with a salesperson at CompUSA or Circuit City and explain what you are trying to do, they can probably give you advice on a set that is affordable and will do the job.

If you want an inexpensive camera that does just about everything under the sun, you should look for a Samsung Digimax S500. It takes amazing pictures, has outstanding quality, and takes video as well. Plus you can stream video, say of your family at Christmas, through it to your PC. It's only $129.99 at Circuit City. I bought it back in June and just reccommended it to another two of my co-workers. Its a great camera, and will work for just about any job you need it to, and more.

Any questions? Feel free to email me.
