The reactions of photosynthesis remove electrons from water forming oxygen gas. (The hydrogen atoms of water are just released into solution as protons.) The electrons are ultimately transferred onto NADP+ to form NADPH. When NADP+ gains a pair of electrons, it picks up a proton from water.
