Asylum is where a person is granted some sort of immigration status in the UK because he or she fears serious harm in his or her home country. A person who is applying for asylum is commonly referred to as an asylum seeker. A person who has been granted status because of his or her fear is referred to as a refugee. The Home Office assess each case and decide whether the fear is founded.

An asylum seeker is someone who is applying to stay in the country they have fled to, permanently. A refugee is just a person who has had to take refuge in another country, but is not asking to stay there permanently.
