No its a myth.
What can a western woman do which a eastern woman cannot do? In fact women in east have more rights than the women in west.
I am not talking about some extremist societies which are in minority.
Men and women should have rights and duties according to the functions they perform.
In west women are expected to share the burden of earning equally and are also entrusted with child bearing and upbringing of children.

If your asking if women in the west have more individual rights than women in the east then yes I believe they do, but If the question is do they have equal rights with men then no. It doesn't matter if its the east west or anywhere else men have more rights than women in every country around the globe. With power comes privilege and for the majority of history men have been in power throughout the world. I am not agreeing with the policies just presenting facts.

I have lived in Japan and I have lived in East Africa. Culturally what people in the west look upon as rights may not be the same as what people in the east refer to as rights. When it comes to issues such as voting, military service, child bearing a womans right to choose, family issues often the west is ahead of some eastern countries in giving rights. However, some African nations such as south Africa and even India farther east are giving the US a run for it's money with more inclusive policies for women in politics especially. The west prides itself on personal freedoms whereas the east often looks more to tradition and group mentality. The real question should be how can we all work together to assure the rights of women are protected and advanced in all countries to a status that is equal to men.

Men don't have more chances than women...they just have different chances. If one is focussed on what they don't have instead of what they do have, they certainly will become unhappy very quickly. The problem is that feminism has convinced women that what they do have is of no value. Smart men know otherwise, which is why they look for women who know what they have is valuable. This is different from a woman who only values what men have and tries to be strong in those areas instead of being strong in the areas she has natural strength in. Equal rights does not mean men and women are equal...it's very simple for all to see that they are not equal. But women can have equal rights and be equally valuable without being completely equal...unless she choses to ignore her own values and seek what is valuable in men. Then, she is not so valuable because she has cast away her true strengths.

Yes, you're right in a lot of ways. All societies have high levels of domestic violence and rape. Sometimes it seems that the west and the east simply swing to extremes in oppressing women. The east denies women any sexuality at all (through dress and clitoridectomies) while the west judges a woman almost exclusively in terms of her appearance (thinness, general attractiveness, "sexiness"). Both are oppressive. It's too bad there is no society where women (and men) can live free of violence and coercion and express their sexuality on their own terms, as long as it does not oppress or coerce someone else.

Absolutely, women have more rights in Western countries. Unfortunately, there is a high rate of sexual exploitation and assault in both Third World and First World countries that must be stamped out. This involves implementing long prison-terms for the production of pornography, sexual assault, domestic violence and the solicitation of a woman on the street. Things are changing and will continue to change.
Government policy and media coverage need to focus on these issues, along with helping the homeless and catering to the needs of single mothers and low-income families. More and more private corporations are stepping in to help people. It is amazing what you can do if you put your mind to it. I just read an article about 23,000 Jewish-Canadians who raised $1.5 million to help out the troops in Lebanon. That averages out to about $65 per person. Small efforts by many add up.
It is not perfect here, but it is a lot better than a country like Syria, presently being overrun by terrorists who hate democracy.

We do have more rights, legally - but we still don't have all the legal rights and priveleges as the men in our societies. I don't think that we should look at it in 'degrees' of opression .... It doesn't matter if women are a little or 'a lot' opressed, as long as there is opression we should be discontent with the state of things.... So, although we do have more rights, we're still not - by a long shot- equal under the law or under social standards to men.

I would say in America and Western Europe..you probably have more rights than the majority of Traditional Eastern Nations. I would also say there are probably more choices, change for opportunities, and greater chance for advancements in careers. Everything gained also comes with a cost.
