My wife's not very computer friendly, but needs something for work. I don't want to buy her too much computer for her needs, but am curious on what is recommended for a notebook under $750 and why?

For someone who's not very computer friendly, I would highly recommend a Apple Macintosh computer. Problem is a new Macbook is out of your listed price range. The Mac would be quite a bit easier to use however.

I would recommend a Dell notebook over that of an HP/Compaq. HP & Compaq make decent computers, but they cut corners when it comes to technical support, which in turn helps them keep the cost of their computers low. In my experiences, Dell follows through on their warranties much quicker. Almost all US computer companies have outsourced their support to other countries which can make it hard to discuss issues over the phone. For me, Dell has had the reps with the easiest to understand accents.

I would recommend a Dell Inspiron Notebook with the following minimum specs: (AMD or Intel Mobile Processor, 512MB ram, 80GB hard disk, 24XCD-R/DVD Combo Drive). If you have extra funds left over, go for an additional 512MB of ram or a larger hard disk.

Do not buy HP laptops. I owned one and it was the worst computer I have ever purchased. I currently own a Dell and would recommend none other--great customer service and this thing hasnt broken on me yet. If you are willing to wait a year, the back-to-school sales on computers are the best sales of the year.
