The Prime Minister is elected by the Parliament (much like the Congress and Senate combined) while the President is elected by the people (well, most of the time - in the US, you've got the Electoral College, which is another thing)

All commonwealth leaders have Prime Ministers, they are the "first" of a cabinet of ministers in power. It is a party(Conservative, Liberal, ect) that is actually in power, the Prime Minister is merely the head of that party that debates the opposition in the a house of commons.

A president rules solitarily, though he has balance of power through Supreme Court, Congress and Senate. The president is seen as a solitary leader, where as a Prime Minister merely is the head of the leading party.

PS

Not all Prime Ministers are heads of Wimpy Countries- Want proof? Google "War of 1812"- a war between Canada(then the "commonwealth of Canada")and the US- Canada won that war :)

They have different names because they are two entirely different jobs. A president is a person who is personally in charge, a president is the 'Head of state' of a country, the top person.

A Prime Minister is just a person who is in charge of the government (or part of the government) of a country, but isn't actually the Head of State. In the case of Britain, the Prime Minister is the most important minister in the government, it is the person who the Queen (or King) lets run the country, but the Queen is actually the top person.

it is only bcoz their politic systems are different.
The prime minister has almost the same obligations than a president and viceversa.
Both are also assisted by a parliament. Even about that have difference, bcoz in Uk the parliament is formed by Lords and Commons.
In USA .....no Lords at all..........you know how the parliament is formed.....dont you?
