Naruto - Creative, action-filled, original and fun to read or watch. The characters are all well developed and have different personalities. The only downside is probably that most of the characters have depressing pasts, but that just makes the storyline more interesting. It's about a young boy (Naruto) who strives to become the greatest ninja in his village (the title is Hokage). However, he's looked down upon by the villagers since he has a demon sealed inside of him. After he becomes a ninja, he's assigned to a "cell" composed of two other teammates and a leader. As the story progresses, Naruto begins to prove his worthiness and creates new friendships with his peers. Telling any more would kind of spoil the plot, but I can guarantee that this is a great anime to watch. Warning: Do not watch the english version unless you're too lazy to read..
Bleach - The show is filled with completely random moments that will will appear when the setting is too serious. It's worth watching, but isn't the best show out there. It's about Kurosaki Ichigo, a normal highschool student who has the ability to see ghosts. One night a female shinigami appears to take care of an evil spirit, aka a Hollow. When she doesn't have the strength to finish him off, she transfers her powers to Ichigo who becomes something of a substitute Death God.
Hikaru no Go - Strange that you can like this without even having the slightest clue how to play Go. This is the type of show where you get to see the main character grow as the show progresses, which is always fun and interesting to see. It's hard to explain why this show is so likeable, but it's just something you have to see for yourself. The show starts out with Hikaru, a boy with no special talents or interests. When he's in his grandfather's attic he finds a Go board, and unknowingly "frees" a spirit called Sai. Sai was a former Go player from the Heian era. Hikaru is the only one who can see Sai, and he has no idea how to get rid of him. Finally succumbing to his pleas, he starts to play Go in order to let Sai play the game that he actually died for. However, as the show progresses, Hikaru becomes interested in playing Go by himself instead of with Sai's directions. It's basically a story of one strong friendship as he goes on a quest to become a professional Go player.
Full Metal Alchemist - Despite serious appearances, FMA is full of humor and an extremely bizarre and original storyline. The characters are likeable and easy to sympathize with, and the "villians" are all very interesting. The best thing about FMA is that the anime, manga, and movies are basically all different stories. FMA is about Edward & Alphonse Elric, two brothers who practice alchemy. When their mother dies, they (being children) try to resurrect her using human transmutation, which is a taboo in alchemy. The result of their actions cost Al his body and Ed an arm and leg. The rest of the story is their journey as they continue to try and find the Philosopher's Stone, which will help them get their original bodies back.
Ouran Koukou Host Club - Humor in every episode, great graphics, adorable characters, random plot, etc. etc. The best shojo anime I've ever watched. It's about Haruhi, a scholarship student to a prestigious highschool where the only thing that matters is how rich your family is. When she accidentally knocks over an 8 million yen vase, she is forced to join the Host Club in order to pay off her debt. The Host Club is basically a club composed of all male members, each with a different personality and "look." Their job is to entertain the female population of the school. Haruhi, with her boyish appearance, becomes a Host Club member without anyone knowing her actual gender.
Inuyasha - The only bad thing about Inuyasha is the fillers and the random ending for the anime. It's a great action packed show with a few good movies, although some parts are a little repetitive and can get annoying. The main character is Kagome, a girl who travels back in time and pretty much screws up history. She brings back the Shikon no Tama, a jewel that will grant immense power. She revives the demon Inuyasha who had been staked to a tree, and after a series of events shatters the Tama. Thus, Inuyasha and Kagome go on a journey to regain the shattered pieces before a greater evil can.
Samurai Champloo - Short and fun. Kind of a weird show, actually, which makes it difficult to explain. You either like it or you don't. There are three main characters: A rogue, a samurai, and a girl. The rogue and samurai are forced to accompany the girl on her quest to find the "sunflower samurai." It's not really serious and more of a fun show to watch.
I'd also recommend the Prince of Tennis chibi episodes if you want a good laugh.
Hope this helped. :]

Well you've got three viewing options. You can check out youtube.com or crunchyroll.com to watch online. You can check out adult swim which is part of cartoon network and airs like after 10pm Saturday thru Monday. You can also go to a website called rentanime.com which works just like netflix to rent anime once you find a series you really like. Now as far as anime goes if you are into Deathnote you'd like Bleach which also has the shinigami element. If you like gundam type shows which is like transformers only it has people inside of the giant robots i'd suggest one called Escaflowne. It's got the robot thing with some scifi/fantasy elements. Tenjho Tenge is another great one if you like different fighting styles and it takes place in a high school so there are some comical aspects. If you are lookin for some movies i'd suggest my all time favorite Vampire Hunter D and the sequel Blood Lust. Most of what you see on adult swim is pretty good though and will get you off to a good start. Hope this helps!

Yu Yu Hakusho and D.N. Angel. YYH is action packed with great characters and a really awesome story. It's 112 episodes + 2 movies, but all of them are out on dvd.
D.N. Angel is a nice mix of fantasy, romance, and mystery. It's one of my favorites. Oh, and it has plenty of comedy too.
Also, Gundam Wing is great. You might find it a little dry though. It talks quite a bit about politics and philosophy. However, if you like mechs, you'll probably enjoy GW. And don't forget Endless Waltz (the movie).
You could go with Inuyasha. I will warn you that it is excessively long and totally anti climactic.
Another one of my personal favs is Lupin the Third. It's really funny and has quite a bit of James Bond style drama and action. It also leans heavily on language and nudity though, so if you're sensitive, Lupin might not be your thing. It isn't hentai, but it is definitely worthy of an R rating.
Or, you might like something like Tenchi. It's really funny and quite light hearted most of the time. It's very much the sci fi fantasy, and it does have plenty of naked girls in it, so be warned.
Well, those are my personal recommendations. Hope they help! ^_^

Try Eyeshield21.Its about Kobayakawa Sena is a little guy who always get picked on by the bullies in school. Since elementary school, he always play the role of the 'errand boy' to the extent that he has become swift and fast in his movements. Coincidentally, Hiruma Youichi and Kurita Ryukan are looking for a fast running back for their American Football team (Amefuto) and want to put Sena in the team. To hide their new 'star' player from the eyes of other High Schools, Hiruma encases Sena in a Amefuto helmet with a dark visor and name him Eyeshield #21.
The protagonist of the series is Sena Kobaykawa, a shy kid with a light physique, he is a first year at Deimon Senior High, since kindergarden he has always been the gopher of the bullies at school, to the point that he's gotten really swift and fast. Hiruma, a demon-like quarterback and Kurita, good natured lineman are the only guys on the American Football team (Deimon Devil Bats) and are desperately trying to make people join the team. After Hiruma sees Sena's running he is made join the team and becomes Eyeshield 21, wearing an eyeshield helmet to protect his identity from other teams he becomes known as "the mysterious hero from Notre Dame". Inuyasha is my personal favorite.
The characters are very likable and there's a good balance of action, comedy and emotional drama. I also just love the way its drawn and animated, along with the soundtrack.
And, you can watch it on Cartoon Network, which is a good place to start if you don't have a lot of options with tv networks or buying/renting videos.
