Please do not. If you cannot accomodate your Bala Shark's adult size, please return it to the petstore. If it is already big, they will probably pay more for it.
Otherwise, try investing a 100gallon tank. You can get them pretty cheap if you buy used.
Do NOT release him into the wild, it could cause turmoil in the existing eco-system. It could be eaten, or it will eat other fish and possibly starve some of the native predators. Plus, it's illegal.
So, no. Don't. Bring it to your petstore, or sell it, or get a bigger tank.

Well, yes there will be bigger fish that could eat it, but there are a lot better reasons not to release it. Most likely, you don't live in an area where the bala can survive. Do temperatures in your area ever drop below 70 degrees fahrenheit? Are the water parameters of the lake the same as the ones in your aquarium or the same as the parameters it needs? Is there suitable food in the lake for the bala so it doesn't starve? Most likely, if you release an aquarium fish, it will die on its own if it doesn't get eaten first. And, even if conditions are right for your bala to live, releasing your bala is most likely illegal. Most places have laws against releasing aquarium fish into the wild because if they do survive, they can out-compete the other local fish, over-eat important resources and cause big changes in the local ecology. Why are you only keeping one bala anyway? They need to be in groups. And, if you think he "might" get too big, he will get to big, no "if"s about it, so I'd get him a larger aquarium or give him to a petstore.

Don't release it. it will likely die, but it may cause problems in the lake also. Try to take it back to the pet store for a credit. you really shouldn't buy a fish that is going to get too big for your tank. plan ahead and try to get fish that will stay small enough for your tank.

It is illeagal to put it in the lake or river or stream, and depending on where you live it would probably die anyway. If it did survive it would cause problems in the lake's ecosystem and probably cause other fish or plants or something to die. Offer to give it to a pet store. Explain your situation and if it is free they may take it (it would definately live longer.

Never release captive aquarium fish into a native body of water. The best case senario is that it will be eaten instantly or die quickly from the different water parameters.
Worst case senario, you introduce an exotic species that destroys habitate and out-competes native species.
Bottom line, just dont do it.

Most places it is illegal to release fish into the wild if they do not naturally occur there. The best thing to do is give it to a pet store. Since they probably do not naturally live in the waters where you live, more than likely it will not survive, but if it does it will be considered a nuissance and anyone that catches it will probably destroy it.

NO!!!
Never release a tropical fish into the natural environment. It ruins the ecosystem.....and it probably won't survive.
Get a bigger tank or inquire at local aquarium stores--many will take the fish from you. Some even give store credit.
