first off, AVG is know to cause more problems than it solves. (from what i heard years ago) however If you want to use it then use it at your own risk. BUT download AVG first, once downloaded, then disconnect from the internet (so your computer is in stand alone with no network connections either local (your home LAN or internet). only when you are disconnected from the network should you consider uninstalling the norton product. however the first thing you need to do is go to www.symantec.com and get the cleanup tool for norton internet security.
then,
1 uninstall internet security via the control panel add/remove programs.
2, run the symantec clean up tool
3 restart your computer
4 install your new security suite.
can i just say that internet security is a complet internet security suite and not just Antivirus. so removing it and only installing AVG will leave you open to possible attacs as you will no longer have a reasonably good firewall installed.
It would pay you to upgrade to a new year or two licence to Norton IS, or better still go to www.trendmicro.com and download and install internet security. this suite is in my experiance the best suite on the market, as not only does it do the standard of keeping malware (spyware, trojans, virus' etc.) but it does this for both your Wireless lan, and internet connection be that via an ethernet lan or USB or plain old 56 modem.
with this suite you can if you need to restrict access to certain websites or groups of web sites such as for blocking access to adult orientated (porn) sites if you need to to stop a child in advertantly seeing the images for example. it is fully customizable. and once configured your system will be in true stealth mode (www.grc.com for security testing your systems security via the shields up utility), so if you run a business served and hosted at home or your office then you want this suite. I use it and i have not had a problem yet.
and yes any great firewall can put your system in stealth mode with no loss of funcionality or noticable effect on your system.
personally with the norton product and the trend micro product (one on each of my two system) correctly configured and running on my system, my internet connect seems to be operating faster than the alocated band width i pay for on the broadband.
good luck.
rememember the number order of events as listed above for best results.

I would suggest just upgrading Norton to 2007 instead of downloading AVG. Norton is really good and has saved my computer many times. If you do switch to AVG I suggest not uninstalling Norton (if this is an option) because it will still detect and stop any viruses, spyware and adware etc. It will just not update itself for the new viruses and spyware. I've also heard that "Ad-aware" is some good free software that definitely will run alongside Norton Internet Security with no problems. Hope this helps.

download but do not install AVG. Two anti virus systems cannot run on the same system. Follow the instructions on the AVG site and installation wizard. It will tell you to uninstall Norton and when to do it.
BTW, if you've been on the internet for more than a minute or two without an anti-virus program you are infected. so run the AVG as soon as it is installed. Hope it is something that it can fix....There are viruses out there that no program can remove and a tech will have to do it or you may choose to re-format your system (again with a tech's help if you don't know how to do it)

Delete norton then install AVG. Download AVG first before you uninstall norton to ensure the file contains no viruses.
AVG is free but not as good as other pieces of software out there. You have to ask yourself is the cost of a good anti virus more important than potentially your files and information?

i had the same dilemma...turns out that after my norton expired, i did all this research on it and found out it wasn't that good. I have to clarify that it is not that good because it uses way too much resources on your computer (AVG hardly uses any). Plus you have to pay every year for the subscription. I've had AVG Free and haven't had any problems. Anyhoo, here is a link to remove norton from my favorite website
www.bleepingcomptuer.com
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic34671.html
the reason you need specific instructions is that they make norton products very difficult to uninstall..(when you do the add/remove thing) and when you do, there are still lots of remnants of norton on your computer. AVG free is easy to d/l and install...just focus on getting norton OUT! good luck.
PS if you need some anti spyware or anti adware advice, email me.

The Internet is not a safe place if you go online without securing your computer. The information here may seem like a lot to absorb, especially for novice computer users, yet if you are patient and take each item one at a time you will soon realize how uncomplicated this really is. Following these protection guidelines is an absolute must in today's online world.
After applying everything listed here you are lowering your vulnerability to almost zero; however nothing will ever protect you 100%, and don't ever believe anyone who claims otherwise.

Avast home edition Anti Virus
Zone Alarm Firewall
SpwareBlaster Spy-mail-Addware Blocker
All free programs sorry no links but a Google or similar will find them.
A word of caution when I uninstalled Norton it released all it's stored viruses onto the system so download but don't install your Anti Virus program of choice then get rid of Norton.

You'd have to uninstall Norton First....But let me suggest buying a renewal licence from Nortron. Or buy Norton 2007....its WAY better, and has everything you'll need instead of having to use 2-3 different prgrams.
