You really don't at first, until you experience it through your senses. It's entirely possible that life only exists because people cause it to. But there's better things to worry about than that. Like giving yourself a purpose and direction to exist with.

Rene Decartes considered this question in his Discourse on Method. The answer he arrived at as as solution of knowing whether anything exist, is first of all to know that you exist. He stated this solution thusly: I think therefore I am.
