Instead of suggesting throwing these things out suggest donation. Go through your house and collect all of these things that haven't been used in a long time and ask your mom if you can donate them. This way you can say there are many homeless or needy people who need clothes and other things more.

Babe, I think what you're up against is called 'hoarding' and it is an obsessive-compulsive disorder. The chance that you can talk sense into someone with this disorder is small. Secretly throwing it out is at best a temporary solution. The clutter will find its way back. Does she want to 'store' things in your room because there's no place else left to put them?
People with compulsive hoarding often have problems such as:
http://www.oprah.com/tows/pastshows/200411/tows_past_20041118_b.jhtml
- Difficulty deciding what is valuable and what is not
- Feeling a strong sense of emotional attachment toward their possessions (for example, an object might be felt to be very special, valueable, or a part of them)
- Difficulty making decisions about what to do with possessions
- Trouble remembering where things are (and so they often want to keep everything in sight so they don't forget)
- Let stuff pile up on surfaces like counters, tables, couches until that surface cannot be used for its original purpose
- Feeling a need to stay in control of their possessions (and so they don't want anyone touching or moving their possessions)
- Feel very anxious or upset when they have to make a decision about discarding things
- Feel distressed when they see something potentially useful being discarded, and think they can't feel better until they acquire that object.
- Control their uncomfortable feelings by avoiding making the decision, or putting it off until later

My grandmother lived during the Great depression, she threw nothing away. She would go to the fast food and even save the straws, cups and lids. People in third world countrys save almost everything too. We are to use to obtaining and throwing away in this country. We waste alot. notice all the trash on the side of the roads. is good to save, but is not good to hoard. Is better to share. Excess clothing could be given to a charity of your choice, not the dumpster.

If she lived during the Great Depression then live with it for a while. If you decide that it is out of hand, take a couple things out a day and throw them out in a public dumpster so she can't dig them out.
My grandmother was the same way. When she passed away, it took my parents four days to go through her things. Mind you, she was living with my parents when she passed. Four days to go through a 10x12 room.
Respect her for wanting to save things that could actually be used later (even if it is for a quilt).

What you are dealing with is difficult. Pack rats don't easily change. The older they get, the worse their habits become. Depending on how old you are, you might either move out or start paying for your own clothes so that you have a right to do with them as you please. If your mother does not get counseling, she won't change. It's a difficult problem for families to deal with. Some people save old cars on their front lawns, others save magazines and newspapers, others let their houses get overrun with dozens of cats. They have some kind of mental condition that makes it very upsetting for them to part with their stuff.

Have someone she appreciates go thru things (yours and hers) together and that person will give neutral advice. Encourage your neighboors to have a garage sale block a Sunday. Hope u the best.

Try convincing your mom to have a tag sale, and with the money take her out to a nice restaurant for dinner.

Well, if your an adult, try waiting until your mom is out of the house for more than an hour, get a whole bunch of garbage bags, but all of it in the bags. Have a friend help you load up their car, and drive it to the dump.

Some people can not throw things away. I am one of them. It is easier for me to donate items to goodwill or to the boyscouts etc.
