Everyone pretty much touched on the big benefits.... accessibility, drainage and soil quaility.
You might also add to the list: warmer soil earlier in the spring, better & easier control of weeds and insects.

Look up square foot gardening. You can fill them with compost and never have to walk on them or dig them - just top up with more good stuff as you need it.
