Eve, bcoz all the family joins to wait for Christmas at midnight.
Have dinner together and celebrate when Christmas arrives, after dinner, everyone open the gifts.
I know for you in northern hemisphery is not easy to do that, but for us, southern hemisphery pple, it is nice to do it, bcoz it is summer here, and we have sunlight till 9.30 pm.
But, as we like to celebrate in every occasions we can, we have lunch together also on Christmas day.

Always on the day...not even, as some do, 1 present to open the day/evening before.

Xmas day:
See what Santa brought/open wrapped gifts
A big breakfast
Clean up packages/wrapping from earlier
Start preparing Xmas dinner
Socialize/play with kids and/or games while waiting for things to cook
Serve/eat the big meal
Clean up
Relax and socialize, perhaps put on a movie
Maybe a cocktail or eggnog later

When you have family around, it is usually both days, Christmas Eve and then even more and Christmas Day.

Everyone wants to see you all the time for the holidays.
