You need a wireless router, the modem alone won't do. After you connect your router to the modem, your wii will automatically detect the signal but you will need to enable it. So you go to the settings menu on the bottom left corner of the main menu and find a button that says internet connection settings (or something of that sort, i don't have it in front of me). There will be an option that says wired connection, and 2 that will say wireless connection. If you have installed the router properly, one of the wireless connections will have an identifying name that you choose for the router connection when you install the router. You need to agree to the user guidelines that show on the next screen and the wii will then update itself. After that you can go back to the settings menu and select WiiConnect 24 and turn that on so that your wii will be connect online 24/7 and automatically update even if your system is off.
