That still seems long to me. Should be 3000miles or 5000km.

A change in oil filters. Toyota uses synthetic motor oil at the factory and hope the end buyer will use the same when they maintain the car. This is how they get such high mileage out of the oil. They also use a micro screen and fiber filter to filter out the particulates out of the oil. If the oil never got dirty you would never have the change synthetic oil. Now I am not sure if Toyota changed vendors or just changes filters to help save cost, but I do know the filters have changed and are not as effective at cleaning the oil as the old filters. So they have changed the recommended change interval. Hope this answers your question

A lot of cars are having oil consumption and oil sludge problems with smaller motors. 2 examples of this are the Nissan 2.5 and the VW 1.8T. Nissan is asking people to check the oil every fill up and notify them if there is a consumption issue. VW extended the warranty on the 1.8 to cover issues related to oil sludge and changed the spec on the oil type. Previous answer is correct. Change the oil more frequently to extend motor life. I change mine every 4K, manual says every 5K. (VW 2.0 TDI)

Essentially it all boils down to sludge issues with they're engines...... (search on it..... you'll see!)
From last I heard of.. they just used bulk conventional oil at factory also...
